A new continuous casting machine has been successfully commissioned by the Indian steelmaker Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) at its steel plant in Visakhapatnam.

The equipment was supplied by SMS Concast, part of the German SMS group, and has a casting radius of 12 metres. The five-strand continuous caster has a rated capacity of 1Mt/year and covers a wide range of steel grades from simple carbon steel through to grades for ball bearings, seamless tubes and railway wheels.

According to SMS group, the new caster enlarges the range of products produced at the plant, introducing round bloom sections of 410m and 450mm in diameter as well as 200mm square sections. It also strengthens the company’s position in the field of Special Bar Quality (SBQ) steels.

State-of-the-art Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems ensure efficient operation by minimising personnel requirements and controlling and monitoring all process parameters and capturing key product data for digital production and quality tracking.
