A seven-month strike at the Gerdau Ameristeel facility in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada has ended.

The 190 staff returned to work on 4 January 2010. A new offer from Gerdau was approved by 56% of unionised workers at the steel mill. The walkout occurred over unresolved contract issues like a two-tiered compensation system for workers, a contribution-based pension system and job combinations.

The facility makes merchant bar and rebar. It can melt 340k short tons and roll 320kst/y.

The company said that during the strike it continued to meet customer demand by operating the mill “on a modified schedule and by sourcing products from its network of steel mills located throughout the US and Canada.”
