John Bass of the US Nucor Corporation has been presented with the James F Collins Advocacy Award, one of the Steel Manufacturers Association's most prestigious steel industry awards.

Bass was presented with the award during the joint SMA & AISI Annual Members Conference at The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC.


The award is named in honour of SMA founder, James F. Collins, for his leadership and integral role in the growth of the domestic EAF (electric steelmaking) industry. was established to recognise an individual or team that has made a significant contribution to advocating public policy changes that serve the domestic steel industry.

Past recipients include: James F. Collins (SMA), Eileen Bradner (Nucor), Doug Polk (Vallourec USA) and Tracy Porter (Commercial Metals Company).

Porter, who is executive vice president of operations and COO of Commercial Metals Company and chairman of the SMA, said that Bass “is a tireless champion and advocate for the steel industry who is driven by the notion that we’re stronger as an industry when united.”


SMA president, Philip K. Bell added, “John’s work on steel industry matters involving government trade policy and compliance with United States and international trade laws demonstrates the knowledge, passion, and commitment needed to influence public policy decisions at the highest levels. His unique ability to encourage engagement and build coalitions make him a deserving recipient of this SMA honour.”

The SMA is North America’s largest steel trade association, and the primary association for electric arc furnace steel producers.
